Policy Ideas

Below are my thoughts on how we can implement improved healthcare and education in our state along with reducing the societal harms currently caused by our justice* system.

Modern Day Slavery

Our state prisons are privatized and that comes with a perverse incentive to keep as many humans in the system as possible. I will be fighting to remove the profit motive that takes our state's resources away from reducing societal harms and can even lead to more harm.

Our state prisons keep the humans inside in such abhorrent conditions that we are being sued by the Department of Justice. This problem has built up over decades and will not be a quick or simple one to fix. One thing is clear, we must DO something to get started.

The first step from me to address the most urgent issues is to declare a state of emergency and bring in our National Guard. This will help with understaffing and bring in additional non-ADOC oversight. Along with the N.G., we will implement a method of reporting issues and concerns that is both accessible to all humans inside the ADOC facilities and is delivered to multiple agencies, including Federal, to mitigate cover-ups and corruption.

Healthcare

Alabama's access to quality healthcare is severely lacking. We are actively working on policy to help improve both quality and access for every resident of our state.

One step is to accept and use the increase Medicaid funding available to our state from the federal government, which covers ~90% of the cost to implement medicaid expansion.

With this expansion we can reallocate existing funding to expand mental healthcare among other services to help all the residents of our state.

Education

Equitable funding for our state education is a priority and must be addressed in order to offer the education improvements our state desperately needs.

We need create a statewide education policy that ensures ALL our public schools provide students, teachers, and staff the tools and resources needed to be successful and achieve each of their unique goals.

This policy needs to include new age-appropriate requirements to educate our youth about sex, gender, family dynamics, races, cultures, colors, genetics, languages, to name a few.

Economy & Environment

As of 2022, no one is accounting for the costs of the infringement on human life, the quality of human life, and the environmental degradation. I will demand that financially responsible parties be held accountable for participating in hazardous and damaging practices. The burden of assuring safe and healthy living conditions for people in every county all over our state will not be placed on the backs of our residents.

Rather, it will be placed squarely on the corporations that have previously avoided responsibility. The current accounting system, Single Bottom Line, merely compares income minus costs to produce the sole number that counts to a CEO and their board of directors: profit. We can no longer remain reactive and must become proactive by holding them accountable for any future disasters. Before calculating genuine profit from gross revenue, Triple Bottom Line adds two more items of consideration: Human Cost and Environmental Cost.

Cannabis

The short version is that with no other barriers or concerns, cannabis should be fully legal and accessible for people to grow and use as they please.

For more context: At this point, I fully support decriminalizing marijuana day 1 in office. Legalizing I hesitate to say yes because of problems like we're seeing with the licensing for medical cannabis.

The current legislature makes it functionally impossible to grow cannabis unless you are a wealthy person or group who can afford the $30,000-50,000 licenses. By design, our state only has a limited number of these licenses.

Additionally, I'm concerned about the process of making it legal. Currently, there are untold numbers of individuals and groups selling and growing cannabis illegally who will, without consideration when formulating the change, be negatively impacted by wealthy groups who could afford the license.

I'm researching solutions to safely discover the number of people currently operating and using illegally with the end goal of understanding how much effort will be needed to mitigate the negative impact of legalizing marijuana as quickly as possible.

Firearms

The previously posted firearms policy has been removed in light of my increased awareness and broadening knowledge regarding the rate of domestic terrorist events happening around not only our country but our very own state.

I am stating emphatically upfront, I believe in every human's right to freedom.

Like TBL Accounting, we must not look at the epidemic of firearms violence as a simple equation to solve. The cost of human life (as incalculable as it is) must be considered when looking for ways to expand the freedom for Alabama residents. I will be focused not only on our freedom to protect ourselves but also our freedom from threats to live a life without fear of losing our life or the life of a loved one through firearms violence.

If you want to help protect the lives of every human in our state and want to discuss firearms policy, please schedule a meeting with me.
